Water Softeners

Hard water leads to a number of problems and increases your expenditure on repairing the plumbing fixtures and appliances. Many families invest in hard water softeners to get relief from these problems. But still, a vast number of people wonder if it is worth the investment. Let’s weigh the pros and cons of investing in a water softener.

 Cleaning the Kitchens and Bathrooms

A water softener removes excess minerals that make water hard such as minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium and replaces them with softer minerals such as sodium or potassium. Once these are removed, the formation of lime scale due to the water is reduced drastically. It becomes easy to clean bathrooms and kitchens, including the tiles and other fittings.

Expenses Involved

It can be expensive to have a softener installed. It’s not just the installation cost but the running cost as well, which includes electricity and the salts used for softening hard water. Additionally, you need to pay for its maintenance.

But, if you look at the other side of the coin, with hard water softeners, you save a lot on other appliances such as geysers and washing machines. They work more efficiently saving on electricity. They also last longer and it is easy to maintain.

Effect on Clothes

Softer water has better cleaning power. The soap lathers well and is gentle on the clothes. This is the reason why soft water reduces the consumption of detergent and other soap products.

Effect on Hair and Skin

Soft water is good for the skin as it does not clog the skin pores and allows the skin to be naturally moisturised. It also offers relief from eczema unlike hard water, which can dry out your hair and skin. You can save on skin care and hair care products if you use the water that you get as a result of hard water softeners.

Environment-Friendliness

During the regeneration process, a significant amount of water gets wasted. But, if you continue with hard water, soon you will face plumbing issues, which could possibly cause leakage leading to much more wastage. Soft water increases the durability of plumbing fixtures, thereby saving a lot of money.

The energy consumed for the functioning of softeners is very low and is comparable to that consumed by an alarm clock as the more recent models regenerate only when required, thus optimising the usage of water and energy.

Consumption and Its Effect

The water may leach heavy metals through the plumbing, making it unsuitable for drinking and cooking. Also, the taste is not palatable for all. This can be a problem, but there is a solution for this too. You can have a separate plumbing done for the water that you wish to consume. An easy option is to install an RO water purifier, which removes hardness and makes water safe for consumption.

Considering all the above points, we can say that overall, it is a good idea to get a water softener installed if you get hard water supply at home. Even the insignificant downsides are offset by its advantages in the long run.
